Opening the new release library is a four-disc special
edition of SUPERMAN: THE MOVIE, which
includes the original 1978 theatrical release and the
2001 Director's Cut versions of the film.
Yet the most anticipated of the DVD releases will
be the long-awaited SUPERMAN II: The Richard Donner
Cut, which restores much of the sequel footage
the director shot simultaneously during SUPERMAN
production, but which was discarded when producers replaced
Donner with Richard Lester to complete the second installment.
|
| |
Lester reshot many of the completed sequel scenes,
giving SUPERMAN II a much more comedic
tone than originally intended. The new DVD version
will restore Donner's filmed-but-unused footage, including
a different ending and 15 minutes of Marlon Brando scenes
which reveal more of Jor-El's relationship with his Earth-raised
son.
Warner will simultaneously release deluxe DVD editions
of SUPERMAN III and SUPERMAN IV,
plus a special two-disc DVD edition of Richard Lester's theatrical
version of SUPERMAN II. |

| EDITORIAL
OPINION |
| By Perry White,
Managing Editor of The Daily Planet |

|
Once again, we are faced with dark and difficult
times, not only in Metropolis, but across this country
and around the globe.
Yet as we face such hardships then and now, we shall
unite and see our way to better times, as we
have then and we will now.
While we welcome the return of Superman, we must
also accept and fulfill our duties as citizens to join
his mission and combat evil, to fight for truth and
justice, together and as individuals. Super heroes
do not fly to our aid in order to absolve us of personal
responsibility — indeed, that is a power which
each of us has, a power we must exercise daily and always
as members of the civilized world.
Heartless, immoral villains such as Lex Luthor
thrive and return to plague us because they depend on
our lapses in maintaining our personal war against evil.
He preys on the weak, on the infirm, and especially
on the corrupt. He feeds on our fear, and he exploits
our frailty so that he may walk our streets and presume
that "ordinary citizens" will not stand in
his way. Evil is the ultimate weakness, and so
it survives and breeds on weakness to infest our world
of light with its dark poison, slipping and slithering
between the cracks in our sidewalks and streets.
Yet as we remain strong and diligent, together
we can rid Metropolis of this sickening scourge, for
our most powerful weapon is hope. Times will be
dark, but the dark of night never lasts. Though
moments of hopelessness may bring you down, remember:
look up in the sky.
The management of the Daily Edge thanks Mr. White
for his contribution. |
