Earlier this week, FilmEdge attended a preview screening of Disney•Pixar's TOY STORY/TOY STORY 2 3-D Double Feature and gives our highest marks to this special re-release, sure to delight familiar and new fans alike. While this engagement touts next year's release of TOY STORY 3 produced in 3-D, this Double Feature release is no mere marketing gimmick. Both TOY STORY films are bona fide winners in their own right, and now their magical transfer to 3-D viewing only enhance their heartfelt, fun-loving tales.

No doubt you've enjoyed TOY STORY 1 and 2 on their debuts in theaters and countless times at home on DVD, but I can honestly say you haven't experienced them at their fullest if you miss this 3-D double feature. Not only does the 3-D technology add visual wow and amp up the creative cool factor, this extra depth actually enhances the characters and their stories that may well change your perspective on the films. The next-gen 3-D glasses are quite comfortable even if you already wear specs (like me), and while the lenses dim the image brightness just a bit, both films look spectacular in this new format (as have previous releases like UP earlier this year).

Perhaps the most striking example of this effect is how the 3-D actually emphasizes that these are walking, talking toys in a human-size world — a thematic concept which the filmmakers built into the movie without the benefit of 3-D viewing which now blooms into full realization. As Buzz, Woody and the others scurry and scatter through Andy's bedroom and beyond, the 3-D presentation dramatizes the fun and perils of their tiny size amid the real world. Since you now see this entire world in three dimensions, the visuals emphasizes the scale of life from the toys' point of view in ways that will recapture your imagination all over again!

Another TOY STORY scene enhanced by 3-DFortunately the digital projection clarifies details like you've never seen before as well: while the Army Men describe Andy's birthday presents from inside the planter, their cover in between the leaves and stalks resembles a magnificent miniature jungle in a way 2-D simply couldn't capture.   Audiences will laugh and squeal as the toys cross a busy street hidden under traffic cones, giant cars and trucks roaring overhead. Such expertly designed scenes only in increase in entertainment value via 3-D viewing, as do both films overall. Careful viewers will marvel at the countless subtle details enriched by 3-D as well, like the reflections glimmering off Buzz's glass dome and the textures of the fabrics, walls and floors enlivening the toys-eye view of the world.

Fans of Disney•Pixar and excellent family filmmaking should not miss this two-week TOY STORY 3-D Double Feature now playing only in theaters through October 15th. Of course you'll get your first look at TOY STORY 3 which opens next June and promises to make this toy trilogy three times the fun.
