Microsoft Kinect debuts motion-controlled STAR WARS game at E3

June 14, 2010 — Jumpstarting this week's E3 2010 video game expo, Microsoft previewed its new motion-based game platform Kinect, and unveiled a short preview of an upcoming LucasArts STAR WARS game which debuts on the system in 2011.  This new interface system compatible with XBox 360 consoles will allow players to swing and slash with a lightsaber completely free of a game controller.

As you can see from the (silent) video below, the graphics of this yet-unnamed STAR WARS game aren't as detailed and shaded compared to many high-end XBox 360 console games, likely due to the work required to motion-control the game via Kinect.  Of course, this is an advanced preview of game play, so the final product may look better upon release next year.  Expect this trade-off in graphics complexity to gain controller-free play, and teaming with LucasArts to put a virtual lightsaber in the hands of STAR WARS fans is a smart move.  Sword fighting is a natural, intuitive style of game play and franchise fans know a great deal about lightsaber dueling and Force powers from the feature films and other SW games.  What remains to be seen and proven in hands-on tests is if Microsoft will deliver a play experiene any different from what exists via Nintendo Wii, or is the controller-free play the hook expected to lure XBox-ers into the Kinect experience.  With this LucasArts title not due until next year, Microsoft's Kinect will have to prove itself with its own titles until these big license IPs like STAR WARS to summon players.
