04.10.09 : TRACK LIST AND COVER ART FOR GIACCHINO'S TREK SCORE
Varese Sarabande has released the front and back cover art for composer Michael Giacchino's STAR TREK
original score. The original soundtrack CD will contain 15 tracks with a total run time just over 42 minutes, ranging from very short cuts (26 seconds containing the classic STAR TREK series theme) to over 9 minutes of end credits composing. From Varese Sarabande's description:
From producer/director J.J. Abrams (Lost, Mission: Impossible: III, and Fringe) comes a new vision of the greatest space adventure of all time, Star Trek, featuring a young, new crew venturing boldly where no one has gone before. Starring Chris Pine as Kirk, Zachary Quinto as Spock, Simon Pegg as Scotty, with Eric Bana, Winona Ryder and Leonard Nimoy.
Composer Michael Giacchino, who has served as J.J. Abrams’ musical lieutenant on all his projects, follows the extraordinarily rich musical legacy of Alexander Courage, Jerry Goldsmith, and James Horner, as he boards the Enterprise for her maiden voyage.
I'll include a track list after the CD cover art jump below, in case casual readers don't want to read such semi-spoiler details, but suffice it to say MISSION: TREK 2009 looks forward to reviewing Michael Giacchino's score on its own merits, and we'll publish our review as soon as available. Meanwhile, the STAR TREK score is available for pre-order, arriving May 5th, 2009.

04.08.09 : EARLY REVIEW OF MICHAEL GIACCHINO'S STAR TREK SCORE
MISSION: TREK 2009 continues covering the World Premiere week for J.J. Abrams' STAR TREK, with excerpts from a very positive review of Michael Giacchino's TREK score by ScoreKeeper at AICN, who attended the film's sneak premiere in Austin. While ScoreKeeper is 'only' reviewing the score from one viewing of the film itself, some great insights are included like this:
Michael Giacchino’s score for J.J. Abram’s STAR TREK is a real ear-opening, boldly-going, riveting trichotomy of quality composed music earning it’s placement among the ranks of the upper echelon of STAR TREK scores.
More good news for fans of Michael's and those anticipating his score playing an important role in the dramatic arc of the story:
There were three major components to the score that struck my ear upon my initial viewing of the film. The first is the deep underlying emotion running hilt to tip throughout the entire musical presence of the film. Even the bombastic action sequences were emotionally charged. A mere ten minutes into the film, I was reduced to tears and had only the music to blame.
Secondly, Giacchino’s primary TREK theme is cut from the same swath as other well-crafted themes heard throughout the history franchise yet remains remarkably original. It’s a theme for this STAR TREK yet it nestles comfortably among its popular brethren. I found myself humming it all day today remembering its key entrances in the film (there were many, and they are glorious).
I'll encourage all MG and TREK fans to read ScoreKeeper's full review at AICN linked above. MISSION: TREK 2009 will review Michael Giacchino's STAR TREK score along with the feature film as soon as possible, and we can't wait for both! Keep this channel open for more updates as they happen.
04.08.09 : MORE STAR TREK PREMIERE REVIEWS AND VIDEO REPORTS
MISSION: TREK 2009 continues covering the World Premiere week for J.J. Abrams' STAR TREK, with these selected reviews and video reports from around the world. The Australian offers their stellar review from the Sydney premiere, stating quite boldly:
The result is a triumph, certain to be regarded as not just one Trek's better moments, but one of the finest films made in the sci-fi genre. Special effects in films grow daily more complex and believable. Abrams will make you believe in a crisp future full of green women, bug-eyed aliens serving on the bridge of the Enterprise, and space conflicts that make most previous Trek films look like Saturday morning cartoons.

04.07.09 : TWO NEW EXCLUSIVE STAR TREK VIDEO CLIPS NOW ONLINE
MISSION: TREK 2009 received word from Paramount about two exclusive new film clips from J.J. Abrams' STAR TREK, hosted at Yahoo! Movies and MTV Movie Blog.
MTV offers the clip 'Shot of Love' in which James T. Kirk (Chris Pine) attempts to hit on Uhura (Zoe Saldana) in a local bar, but manages to stir up trouble against four Starfleet Academy cadets. Uhura is more than willing to handle the situation herself, but impetuous Kirk acts first with impulsive bravado, a solid reference back to the Jim Kirk first seen by fans in the late 1960s. MTV is kindly sharing a streaming file of this clip which you can view in our Video Transmissions section.

Yahoo! Movies offers the 'Disease and Darkness' which follows Kirk's barfight as he gets his first introduction to Leonard McCoy (Karl Urban) on a shuttle ride to the Enterprise. The technophobic doctor puts on quite a display of resistance to space travel harkens back to many classic moments with McCoy in the original STAR TREK series.
Although the first word from Paramount promised three new clips, only two have appeared so MISSION: TREK 2009 will keep an eye open for the final video and offer HD streaming video files of these film clips as soon as their exclusive promo windows close in a few days.
04.07.09 : STAR TREK SNEAK PREMIERES IN 'WRATH' SECRET SCREENING
Paramount Pictures plotted a brilliant surprise for TREK fans last night as a screening of STAR TREK II: THE WRATH OF KHAN became a surprise premiere of J.J. Abrams' new STAR TREK film. An audience of loyal fans were expecting to see Nicholas Meyer's highly regarded TREK sequel along with 10 minutes from Abrams' upcoming film, but a few minutes into the story this new print of the 1982 film 'melted'. Audiences' hearts sank only momentarily as Leonard Nimoy walked into the theater, asking if they would prefer to premiere the new movie instead. The crowd went wild, of course!
This was a bold and daring switcheroo by Paramount, since TWOK holds strong fan loyalty to this day, but from the reviews appearing online today, the gamble paid off huge for both the studio and Abrams. Audience reviews have been very positive so far, and the comparison between TWOK and STAR TREK have been most favorable which is a stunning achievement. Quotes range from the analytical:
This film is the first full fledged A-level STAR TREK movie since STAR TREK: THE MOTION PICTURE and the first truly successful one. The film works on emotional levels, time-travel logic levels, hard science levels, action levels and at tackling the very goddamn tricky notion of recasting icons of a beloved series! The actors are not mimicking the originals, necessarily – so much as becoming those characters. This could very well be the most accomplished REBOOT of any major series I’ve seen. It is confident and sharper than you can imagine.
to the ecstatic:
I cannot express how happy I am with this film. Every moment worked for me – it felt like there wasn’t so much as a hair out of place. I LOVED it. My non Trek-loving wife LOVED it. And the energy in the room was incredible. When I walked out, I was saying it was as good as WRATH OF KHAN. Now that I’ve had some time to settle and reflect, I’m not going to quite make that claim. It’s not as great as KHAN. But it is a short hairs breath away from being that good. It is certainly better than any other TREK movie to date that doesn’t have the word WRATH in the title. Solid, fun and a pure joy to watch, this is the summer blockbuster to beat.
I'll link you to specific reviews online — warning that they main contain some spoilers, though reviewers have been conscientious in not spilling all the beans — but generally speaking, Abrams' is earning credit for revitalizing the TREK franchise with his film of Robert Orci and Alex Kurtzman's original story/script, delivering a reboot of TREK that is both long on action and solid characterizations which embody the best of what TREK means to fans. Chris Pine (Kirk), Zachary Quinto (Spock), Karl Urban (McCoy), Simon Pegg (Scotty) and Zoe Saldana (Uhura) all received high marks for their new and challenging work as these iconic characters, enacting traits which made them beloved to fans while stamping the roles with their own talents and personalities.
This surprise premiere all happened just hours before the official World Premiere in Sydney, Australia where most of the cast attended in person. Yet no one at the Alamo Drafthouse in Austin, Texas seemed disappointed by Paramount's launching of STAR TREK right here in America. At your own risk of learning some plot spoilers and hints at others, read these reviews to sample the overwhelming enthusiasm displayed after last night's screening:
Ain't It Cool News has three articles from Harry Knowles, Massawyrm and an audience compilation by Quint.
Cinema Blend files a report from viewer Jon B.
CHUD offers a slightly mixed but positive review by reader Glen Clark.

Empire Online has praise and concerns in their review.

04.03.09 : THREE NEW TREK PHOTOS AND PG-13 RATED MOVIE POSTER
MISSION: TREK 2009 has received three new publicity stills from Paramount Pictures, featuring a red-alert consultation on the bridge between Kirk and Spock, a new shot of Nero plotting against his enemies, and Kirk crawling out of his escape pode. Also, today Paramount released news that J.J. Abrams' STAR TREK has been given a PG-13 rating by the MPAA, and accordingly released a new one-sheet theatrical STAR TREK poster with the announced rating, now available in Downloads.

04.03.09 : STAR TREK SITE ADDS CREW DOSSIERS & WALLPAPERS
Paramount Pictures updated the official STAR TREK movie website with two new panorama 360° views of the Enterprise bridge in both standard and Red Alert modes, embedded with click points for detailed views of viewscreens, console control panels and more. This gives fans our best look yet at the new bridge in both design specifics and a good spatial sense of the environment in relation to the captain's center chair. The Red Alert viewing mode changes the look and mood of the bridge subtly but dramatically.

New Dossier files have also appeared for James Kirk, Christopher Pike, Leonard 'Bones' McCoy, Uhura and the USS Kelvin, the latter of which confirms that Jim's father, George Kirk, serves as First Officer aboard the Kelvin under Captain Robau. These Dossiers also offer wallpaper designs in four sizes, all linked in MISSION:TREK's Download Libary.
4.01.09 : REVIEWING STAR TREK: COUNTDOWN #4 PREQUEL CONCLUSION
|
MISSION: TREK 2009 concludes reviewing Paramount's official prequel comic series with Star Trek:Countdown Number Four, a spoiler-heavy finale which establishes the opening actions of J.J. Abrams' upcoming STAR TREK feature film this summer.
As Nero continues exacting his revenge against the Federation and Klingon Empire for his losses, Spock embarks on his secret mission to halt the expansion of a supernova which threatens the entire galaxy.
This conclusion puts all the 24th century TNG character cameos into front-line action against Nero, including one substantial surprise for a TNG favorite.

03.19.09 : SPOILERS REVEALED ABOUT TIME TRAVEL IN STAR TREK?
MISSION: TREK 2009 has published a new speculative article, The Secret of Accidental Time Travel, as a follow up our review of the Star Trek:Countdown Number Three prequel comic. Using the recent story and plot revelations from Countdown Issue 3 and assembling clues from the comic series and the latest STAR TREK theatrical trailer , I speculate on a possible, perhaps logical scenario which explains why and how this story jumps back into the 23rd century to revisit the origin of the Enterprise crew under young Captain James T. Kirk. How do Spock and the Romulan renegade Nero cause, perhaps unintentionally, this rift in time to launch movie audiences back to the earliest days of classic STAR TREK history and what changes will we find there? If you're game for some potential plot spoiler speculation, read our latest MISSION:TREK article.

03.18.09 : REVIEWING STAR TREK: COUNTDOWN #3 PREQUEL COMIC
|
MISSION: TREK 2009 continues reviewing Paramount's official prequel comic series with Star Trek:Countdown Number Three, a spoiler-rich installment which goes lightyears in setting up the story for J.J. Abrams' upcoming STAR TREK feature film this summer.
A disaster at the Romulan homeworld has turned Nero and his mining crew into vengeful renegades, stopping at nothing to make his enemies pay the price for his losses. Meanwhile, Spock reunites with more Federation colleagues to attempt a risky mission which would stop the Hobus system supernova which threatens peace and survival in the galaxy.
No less than two iconic TNG characters make cameo appearances in this issue, which hints at the future dynamics of director J.J. Abrams' feature film STAR TREK this May.
